Appleton Recognized Firewise Community/USA |
The community of Appleton, located along Highway 124, became a recognized Firewise Community/USA on Oct. 17, 2006. A luncheon and recognition ceremony was held Dec. 14, 2006, in the Garden View Room of the Clinton Presidential Library. Accepting a plaque on behalf of the community were James Housley, Ola Faie Condley and Veo Condley. Also pictured are John Shannon, State Forester; Glen Fortenberry, Fire Team Leader, Ouachita & Ozark-St. Francis National Forets; Michele Steinberg, Firewise Communities Support Manager, and Don McBride, Assistant State Forester-Protection. Firefighters completed wildfire risk assessments for more than 400 homes in their district, and hosted an open house on Oct. 10, 2006, to explain to homeowners the importance of creating and maintaining a defensible space.
