Carrollton

Recognized Firewise Community/USA

The community of Carrollton received Firewise Communities/USA recognition in October 2007. A luncheon and recognition ceremony was held Oct. 23, 2007, in the banquet hall of Mount Magazine State Park Lodge. Accepting a plaque presented by Governor Mike Beebe was Beth Randleman, Alpena VFD Fire Chief.

The Carrollton Firewise board was formed in March 2006. For their first mitigation project, volunteers cleaned up an overgrown lot. (Photos below)

The community was established as the original county seat in January 1834, and is located three miles west of Alpena on Highway 412. The majority of the buildings were dismantled and moved to Alpena in the late 1800s and early 1900s, however, the old schoolhouse is still intact. Residents in the area are predominantly cattle farmers/ranchers or poultry growers.
