September 2005

The September 2005 Arkansas FireWise Home of the Month belongs to Melvin and Edna Cassity of Holiday Island. The Cassity home features a green, Firewise lawn and low-growing shrubs in the front yard, and defensible space in the steep and narrow backyard.

Jack Deaton, Holiday Island Fire Chief, nominated the home because of the time and effort the Cassitys put into clearing brush and installing fire safe plants. Jim Smalley, Wildland Fire Protection Manager of the National Fire Protection Association, and Deaton presented the Cassitys with their Arkansas FireWise Home of the Month certificate.
