The Arkansas FireWise Team chooses a home each month that illustrates FireWise principles. Thanks to Arkansas Forestry Commission Fire Management Officer Mark Reed for nominating the March 2006 FireWise Home of the Month, which belongs to Ed Boyd of Van Buren (Crawford County), and features a brick exterior, triple-glazed windows and 13-inch thick walls.

While flying an air attack on Feb. 27, 2006, on the Mount Vista Fire in Van Buren, Reed noticed that this home was not as hard to defend because of the home's construction materials and defensive space extended to the rock bluff overlooking the river. As you can see in the photos below, the fire passed to the east of the home.
