The couple said they decided to incorporate a neatly trimmed lawn in their landscaping because of a fire that started on the side of the road and burned the property prior to the home's construction. The property was overgrown at the time of the fire, and the Thornberrys did not want a similar fire to threaten their new home. The Thornberrys defensible space also includes low-growing vegetation near the home, as well as a concrete pathway which provides an excellent break in the vegetation. Also, note that the home's address can be easily read from the roadway, making it easier for emergency personnel to find.
