Holley Mountain Airpark

Certified Firewise Community/USA

On Oct. 24, 2006, a Firewise Communities/USA recognition ceremony was hosted at Holley Mountain Airpark in recognition of the community's newly designated "Firewise" status. On hand were numerous residents as well as a Regional Federal Review Team assessing the impact the Firewise program has had on communities in Arkansas. Everyone attending the event enjoyed the catered barbecue lunch provided by Lazy L Bar-B-Que. Don McBride, Assistant State Forester-Protection of the Arkansas Forestry Commission, presented the Firewise Communities/USA plaque to members of the Holley Mountain Airpark FireWise Board. David Samuel, Arkansas FireWise Coordinator, presents the board with road signs designating the community's Firewise status.

The FireWise message was taken to a unique community of aviation enthusiasts and pilots on Dec. 1, 2005 at Holley Mountain Airpark in Van Buren County. On Sept. 21, 2006, Holley Mountain Airpark became a recognized Firewise Community/USA.

Every home at Holley Mountain Airpark has an aircraft hangar either next to the home or part of the home, such as the hangar-apartment suite of Joe and Carolyn Marshall, owners of the Arkansas FireWise Home of the Month for December 2005.

Attending the Arkansas FireWise meeting were: Jim Collom - Fire Chief, Bill Collom - Office Manager, Joe Marshall - Assistant Fire Chief, Carolyn Marshall, Clarence Phillips, Billy Linn, Jeane Williams, Sid Nethery, Fred Nethery,Thurman Elliott, Violet Elliott, Eric Auher, Mike Hanlison, Richard Moore, Ron Edwards, Roy Story - AFC Ranger III, Bob Hensley - AFC Ranger II, Mike Curtis - AFC Ranger II, and David Samuel - AFC FireWise Coordinator.

The Arkansas FireWise Team thanks Jim and Bill Collom for their hospitality and also Lt. Clarence Phillips for the great field tour.

There was excellent participation by Arkansas Forestry Commission staff in Van Buren County and plans include one of the County Rangers on the FireWise Board.
