Strickler

Certified FireWise Community/USA

The Strickler/Devils Den FireWise Board and members of the Strickler VFD met at the Strickler Fire Station on November 22, 2004. Original FireWise Board members were Bruce Copeland, president; Isaiah Porter Jr., vice-president; Floyd Cantrell, secretary; Chris Coker, Strickler VFD Chief; Randall Coker, Strickler VFD Assistant Chief; Kenny Coker, Strickler VFD and First Responder; Seth Coker, Strickler VFD; Dena Lamb, Strickler VFD and First Responder; Mark Carte, Strickler VFD; Jessee Cox, Devils Den State Park Superintendent; Dennis Spears, AFC Ranger III, and Kevin Hickie, AFC County Forester.

The agenda included an overview of the Firewise Communities/USA Program and accomplishments during the last two years in Arkansas. Following a break and photo of group attending, the group was trained to conduct risk assessments on homes and structures (including cabins, visitor center and maintenance buildings at Devils Den State Park) that are at risk from wildland fire. The Board decided to have another meeting on November 29 to discuss the schedule of conducting risk assessments.

The enthusiasm of this Board was outstanding! They were only the second Board that had organized prior to my attendance. There is much ice storm damage fuels from recent years that need to be reduced near homes in the Strickler Fire District and also around the cabins in Devils Den State Park.

If the assessments support the need for fuel reduction as anticipated, a chipper may be the best tool to begin this reduction of fuels around homes and cabins in their fire district.
