The community of Appleton, located along Highway 124, became a Certified Firewise Community/USA on Oct. 17, 2006. A luncheon and recognition ceremony was held Dec. 14, 2006, in the Garden View Room of the Clinton Presidential Library. Appleton was presented a plaque and highway signs during a luncheon and recognition ceremony Dec. 14 in the Garden View Room of the Clinton Presidential Library. Accepting a plaque and highway signs on behalf of the community are James Housley, Appleton FireWise Board member; Ola Faie Condley, Appleton FireWise Board member, and Veo Condley, Appleton FireWise Board member. Also pictured are John Shannon, State Forester; Glen Fortenberry, Fire Team Leader, Ouachita & Ozark-St. Francis National Forests; Michele Steinberg, Firewise Communities Support Manager; Don McBride, Assistant State Forester-Protection.
Firefighters completed wildfire risk assessments for more than 400 homes in their district, and hosted an open house October 10 to educate homeowners about the importance of creating a defensible space.
