For their first project, the Hatley Volunteer Fire Department hosted a cookout in conjunction with the July 4th holiday and discussed the importance of creating a defensible space to more than 75 residents. The fire department kicked off a mitigation project on October 21, 2006. Volunteers gathered at the home of an elderly resident whose property had become overgrown with vegetation, as well as fallen tree limbs and leaves. (Photos below). The group estimated the project would take several weekends to complete.
