Hatley

Certified Firewise Community/USA

The community of Hatley, located along Highway 164 between Dover and Moreland, became a recognized Firewise Community/USA on August 24, 2006. A Dec. 14 luncheon and recognition ceremony honoring 19 communities newly designated status as Firewise Communities/USA in the Garden View Room of the Clinton Presidential Library.

For their first project, the Hatley Volunteer Fire Department hosted a cookout in conjunction with the July 4th holiday and discussed the importance of creating a defensible space to more than 75 residents.

The fire department kicked off a mitigation project on October 21, 2006. Volunteers gathered at the home of an elderly resident whose property had become overgrown with vegetation, as well as fallen tree limbs and leaves. (Photos below).

The group estimated the project would take several weekends to complete.
