Kingston Recognized Firewise Community/USA |
The Kingston Firewise board was organized in January 2004, and the Madison County community was recognized as a Firewise Community/USA in February 2006. Located in the heart of the Ozarks in the Boston Mountains, the town was laid out in 1853 by King Johnston, and by 1860, the population was 59 residents. In the 1920s, the town square featured a hotel, drug store, mercantile, barber, blacksmith, doctor's office and saloon. Today, the square includes a café, four stores, bank, post office and fire station. On Oct. 24, 2006, a regional federal review team visited the community of Kingston to learn how the Firewise program has impacted their residents. While there, the group posed for the banner shot at right and visited with members of the fire department and community.
