The Arkansas FireWise Team chooses a home each month that illustrates Firewise principles. Thanks to Arkansas Forestry Commission Fire Management Officer Mark Reed for nominating the March 2006 Arkansas FireWise Home of the Month. The home of Ed Boyd of Van Buren features a brick exterior, triple-glazed windows and 13-inch thick walls.
While flying an air attack on Feb. 27, 2006, on the Mount Vista Fire in Van Buren, Reed noticed that this home was not as hard to defend because of the construction materials used and defensible space extended to the rock bluff overlooking the river. As can be seen in the photos, the fire passed to the east of the home.
