The November 2007 Arkansas FireWise Home of the Month belongs to Glenda and David Thornberry of Fayetteville. The home was nominated by David Samuel, Arkansas FireWise Coordinator, following a trip to Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park.
The couple said they decided to incorporate a neatly trimmed lawn in their landscaping as the result of a fire that started on the side of the road, and burned the property prior to the home's construction. The property was overgrown at the time of the fire, and the Thornberrys did not want a similar fire to threaten their new home.
The Thornberrys' defensible space also includes low-growing vegetation near the home, as well as a concrete pathway, which provides an excellent fire break.
Also, note the home's address can be easily read from the roadway, making it easier for emergency personnel to find (photo at right).
